Reflections on a year full of God’s grace

Well 2017… what a year it has been. Everything from La La land, another royal wedding on the cards weekends away, freshers, STORY events week and hall group events!

Here are a few thoughts about things I’ve learnt this year:

  1. God is faithful

“He will be the stability of your times” Isaiah 33 v 6

When I consider this year and all its ups and downs, I am awed by the faithfulness of God. His faithfulness through the grumbling, the moaning, the dis-contentedness, the dissatisfaction, the self-centred rhythm of our hearts. His faithfulness through our questioning, worries, uncertainties, anxieties, stress and doubt. His consistent and persistent love enduring though we often get side-tracked from following Him. Through anger, sadness, devastation, joy, sorrow, laughter, glee, worry, delight, excitement, He has been faithful day by day, moment by moment. Praise God that however we are feeling, the circumstances we find ourselves in, He does not base His view of us on this. Our salvation is not secured by how we feel; it’s in what Christ has done.

  1. God sustains

“Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.” Psalm 105 v 4.

A verse I have clung to often throughout this year. I am thankful that it is within God’s nature to continue supporting, nourishing, filling, bearing with us, weathering our wimps and cries, maintaining us, upholding us, helping, assisting, nurturing, aiding, suffering for us. God sustains us through hardship, through rejection, regret, grief, disappointment, wrong-doing and worry. Through broken relationships, through hurt, through failings and immaturity. There is nothing in this world, no circumstance, no context in which Christ does not proclaim He shall bring us through it. He looks beyond our personal situations and into the eternal context, desperate for our eyes to be moved from our self-centred viewpoints, up and out to Him and to the joy that is before us. Praise God that He has sustained us so far and shall continue to do so until we are safely home.

  1. God preserves

“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 6 v 1

What a privilege to know that God protects, safeguards, defends… literally “territories” over us. There is not one aspect of your life over which Christ has not declared “MINE!” Looking back over the year, there are countless and countless times in which God has preserved us. And more than that, how He has consistently provided such gracious gifts: for faithful friends committed to pointing us to Christ, for loving Church families constant in providing a spiritual home, for Christian Unions who have given opportunities to grow and learn in numerous ways. Praise God that He works for our good, for our benefit, persistent in preserving us until we see Him again.

  1. God who is gracious

“For it is by grace you have been saved…” Ephesians 2 v 8

He has shown us so much grace. So much grace. Grace when we mess up, grace when we hurt others, we offend, we insult and manipulate. Grace when we fail, when we do not love as we should, when we forget who He truly is. May this also be characteristic of our lives, in the way we love others. Praise God that His graciousness in every way forgives and puts behind Him every wrong doing past, present and future.

Who knows what 2018 will bring. Another year in CU life. How amazing it is to know that the God who is faithful, who sustains, who preserves and who is gracious will continue to be there, by our side every step of the way.

“Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in His deeds toward the children of man.” Psalm 66 v 5
