Parks & Coffee Shops

My favourite parks and coffee shops to visit are…

Hello everyone! Welcome to Cardiff/Bienvenue à Cardiff/Croeso i Gaerdydd!

My name is Laura and I am going into my 2nd year of a Theology and Religions degree here at Cardiff University. I’m from Kent, just outside London, and speak English and French (j’aimerais bien faire connaissance avec d’autres étudiants francophones alors n’hésitez pas de me contacter!). When I am not studying, I enjoy singing with the university gospel choir, making exciting plans for Just Love Cardiff (ask me more about this!) and going for long walks and coffee shop dates with my friends!

Moving to a new city is scary, let alone a new country; but Cardiff is beautiful and has so many things to offer – we hope that you’ll discover as many as possible during your time here and that this vibrant city will soon feel like a familiar second home.

As I said, I love going on walks. It tends to rain quite a lot in Wales…Sometimes, the weather will surprise you with a sunny day but as long as you’re well equipped with a raincoat, long walks are an option all year around! Why not check out these locations:

Roath Park and Lake – this is my favourite running location as you can jog or walk alongside the water (usually full of swans and geese!) and through the wild flower gardens. There are several running groups that run around here and these can be a great opportunity to meet other people!

Taff Trail – the Taff trail actually stretches for about 55 miles from Cardiff Bay all the way to Brecon, which you are welcome to try and walk all of (you’ll need camping equipment and a lot of stamina), but I’d recommend taking shorter sections of it as post-lecture strolls or morning runs. Just start at Cardiff Castle and follow the river through Sophia Gardens, Blackweir Fields and Pontcanna Fields to Llandaff Cathedral.

As my friends know, I will often (TOO often) be found in a coffee shop around the city, sometimes studying or reading, but usually chatting. These are a few of my favourite independent picks:

Bigmoose Coffee Co – located in Cardiff city centre, Bigmoose is a not-for-profit coffee shop which also runs a charity helping with mental health, homelessness and and suicide prevention – coffee and food that tastes good and does good.

The Early Bird – just around the corner from Cardiff University main building on Woodville Road, Early Bird serves incredible breakfasts and baked goods in a super cosy atmosphere. It is very popular so get there early!

Stag Coffee – located on Crwys Road, opposite Gower Street, Stag is a self-proclaimed ‘bustling community hub’ and I’d have to agree! The seating outside and inside is perfect for a catchup with friends or an afternoon of essay writing.

At Big Moose – my top coffee shop!

I hope this gives you some suggestions of places to check out during your time here and that you feel settled into Cardiff life soon! Please do get in touch for more advice and top tips or to connect with members who speak your language – see you around!

Laura 🙂
